Why Do Drains Choke in This Town?

Clay pipe in clay ground

The first streets were drained with earthenware pipes, and the reactive soil around them has been swelling and shrinking since before the mines closed. Joints part, lengths sag, and silt settles in the low spots until water stops getting through.

Old gardens, hungry roots

Trees planted beside the weatherboard cottages generations ago send fine roots into any opening in a joint. Cut them back and they regrow through the same gap unless the pipe itself is repaired.

The rise sends its water down

Stormwater from the Wyndham Ridge estate runs downhill toward drains laid when the town was much smaller, so a heavy storm off the ranges can overload them in one go.

Which Drain Is Playing Up?

A few quick checks narrow it down before you ring:

One fixture or several

A single slow basin points at its own trap or branch. Several fixtures slowing together, or a toilet gurgling as the bath empties, points at the main sewer line.

Inside or outside

Water lying in the yard after rain while the house drains normally is a stormwater fault. A sewage smell near the gully is a sewer fault.

Kitchen or bathroom

Kitchen lines choke on fat and food scraps, bathroom lines on hair and soap build-up.

Each drain job has its own page:

CCTV Drain Inspection

A camera run records the inside of the line, so the fault is found and priced before anyone digs. Camera inspection

Drain Jetting

Water at high pressure strips grease, silt and cut roots from the pipe wall, with no chemicals involved. Jetting a drain

Blocked Sewer Clearing

Waste rising in a shower, toilet or gully means the sewer branch has choked and needs opening. Sewer blockages

Stormwater Drain Clearing

Pits and yard lines that flood in a downpour, cleared from the downpipe to the boundary. Stormwater lines

Pipe Relining

A cracked or root-damaged sewer given a new inner wall through an existing opening, leaving the garden intact. Relining without digging

Tree Root Removal

Roots cut from the line, and the gap they came through found on camera. Cutting roots out

How Is a Blocked Drain Cleared?

  1. 01

    Look first

The camera goes in to find the choke and see what the pipe is made from.

  2. 02

    Clear with the right machine

The jetter handles grease, silt and sludge, and the electric eel handles a root mass.

  3. 03

    Look again

A second camera pass confirms water is running freely and shows any damage left behind.

  4. 04

    Price what is left

Any repair is quoted from the footage, which you watch with us.

What Drives the Cost of a Drain Clear?

The biggest variable is what the camera finds:

  • The distance from the nearest opening to the choke, and whether an inspection point sits close to it
  • Earthenware or PVC, since old clay is cleared at lower pressure and with more care
  • The cause, whether fat and silt, a root mass or a length that has collapsed

When We're Not the Right Call

The sewer main running through the street or along the back boundary belongs to Hunter Water, so a choke in that pipe gets reported to them rather than cleared by us. From your inspection opening back to the house, the job is ours.

Questions About Blocked Drains

Is the camera used before and after the drain is cleared?

Yes, both times. The first look finds the choke and shows the pipe around it, and the second, once water is flowing again, proves the line is open. Under the old town that second look also shows whether a cracked clay length is likely to choke again.

Why does the same drain block every winter?

On the older streets the likely answer is a crack. Roots or silt get in through a broken earthenware joint, the clear removes them, and the gap stays open for the next lot. Footage of that joint lets us price a reline or a replaced length instead of another clear.

Do you clear drains on farm and acreage blocks near Greta?

Yes. Blocks out toward Leconfield and Luskintyre are on the run, and a long line between house and outlet is no trouble for the hose reels. Mention roughly how far the line runs when you call, so enough hose comes out on the van.

Can a jetter crack old clay pipe?

Used carelessly, it could. Pressure is set to the pipe material and raised only where the camera shows sound walls. A length that is already broken or sagging will not be fixed by water, so that section gets a repair quote instead of a harder blast.
